I just saw today that ILTA has released the latest issue of their Peer to Peer magazine. I did the cover and this interior illustration.

I'm really happy with this interior piece (that's not to say I'm unhappy with the cover). It is up there in one of my favorite pieces. I could see this making a good art print. It could easily stand on its own.

It's finals time in the WNBA, and the Dream is back for the second year in a row. It's pretty exciting working in professional sports, but even more so for a winning team (Eastern Conference Champs!). We just put up our billboards for the finals and the company sent us some webcam shots from them. It's exciting to see your projects displayed on billboards for everyone to see.

Tuesday night was the Atlanta Dream's last regular season home game as well as fan appreciation night. We gave out team posters and had an autograph session on the court, post game. I'm really happy how these posters turned out. I pretty much had complete creative freedom on these.

I recently finished up a logo for the Atlanta Dream kids club. The club should be kicking off later this year. I've been having a lot of fun lately working on sports related logos and illustrations. I'm excited to start seeing some of the collateral rolling in.

Finally. Sometimes it feels like forever waiting on an illustration to come out. I did this piece a couple months back. I think it's pretty straight forward. Kendall gave me the concept and this is what I delivered. The issue titles seem to be a pretty revolving topic. I think this is the 3rd Knowledge management cover I have done. I guess that is how it goes in the technology world. New software comes out making it (sometimes) more efficient and easier to do things and then people need to learn about them.

This project was to repackage a product with a humorous twist to it. Those that know me well know that I have an affinity for whales. I chose to make a fragrance titled for what it is. Back in the day perfumes and some colognes had an ingredient called ambergris. It is whale vomit.

There are other illustrations on the package that I think are worth showing. I'll hopefully take some more pictures and post those at a later date.

(Turns out owning your own harpoons does come in handy.)

I just saw the lat piece I had done for Ilta up on their sight. I had a little fun making texture for the pie crust.

Kendall told me that she wanted a piece of pie being served, but the filling was to be currency symbols that look like pie filling. Playing off the who pie chart thing.

I have word of a few more jobs I'll be completing for them this month. Look for those in the near future.

I had to create a set of three greeting cards for my humorous illustrations class. I chose to go with a camp stationery. It is for children to bring with them to summer camp to write home to their loved ones. I had a lot of fun with this. I'm really happy with how this new work is turning out. I'm really hopeful that I can start marketing myself to some children's illustration markets.

There are interior illustrations that go along with the cards, but I felt that the front of them was the interesting part. The interior is largely just to tie the inside to the outside.

This is my product for project one in my Humorous Illustrations class. My professor is illustrator Mike Lowery. His stuff is amazing and I am hopeful that I will take away a lot of good knowledge from him. So far I feel that I have learned some valuable stuff.

For this project, we had to create a maze for kids 5 and under. As you can tell I based it loosely off of my childhood. Do kids even have real toys these days?

I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I plan to start to pursue children's illustration. For me it's a large untapped market FULL of illustrations. Hopefully it will be a good direction for me.

It's been a while, but I updated my website. I made a fancier looking invoice as well. The one I was using before was just generated by Word. I used that for way too long. My website now features two portfolios. One in my older technique and one in the newer technique. I've been wanting to have a second technique on my portfolio site for a while now, but I finally have enough work to do so. Go check it out!

As you can see I have updated my blogger header as well to fall in line with the new look.

Sketch Process

I know that this blog is called my process journal (and it started out as such), but I really don't show any bit of my process anymore. I'm very happy with my two recent pieces so I decided to share my sketches so you can see how I start out.

As you can see my sketches are pretty true to how the final looks. The finals aren't always this close to exact, but I try to make my sketches very straight forward so there are no surprise for the client or myself.

Somethings I figure out as I go; for example how the icons in the mail cart look, which icon looks best in the robots hand and where the logos will go on the boxes, the little motion or emotion marks and lastly the colors. Sometimes I have a good idea as to a general color scheme, but not necessarily what will be which color. For instance, I knew that for the Exchange 2010 piece that I wanted to use those colors because they are based off of the colors Microsoft uses for that software, but I played around with where which colors should go as I drew in illustrator.

ILTA just published their latest issue of Peer to Peer Magazine. I did the cover and the interior. This piece is the interior. I did a little bit of experimenting (trying to not stray too far from my usual look). I was pretty inspired by what we were going over in my history of graphic design class. Probably the most inspiration was from A.M. Cassandre, but everything was overall pretty inspiring.
I had a lot of fun with this one. It helped me figure out how to model the people in the exchange 2010 illustration.
The cover was pretty fun too. It has a bunch of mobile devices tiled together. It's almost therapeutic for me to sit down and draw detailed images in illustrator. I enjoy getting in all the small details. Head over to ILTA's website to download this issue and to see my cover illustration.

I was surfing around Dribble and saw a bunch of people making Pray for Japan images. Those of you that know me know that I have an affinity for Japan and felt compelled to produce my own. I'm pretty happy with the concept of it. Instead of a flag I had the idea of turning a towel hanging on the laundry line on its side to look like a flag. Also, similar to other designs, my sun is bisected showing the fault line of an earthquake, but mine is caused by the fold in the towel.

I honestly think that I could have drawn it better, but it was just a quick exercise. Anyways, enjoy.

It's been a while since I updated this blog. I have about a million things going on since I went back to school. I'm trying to make an effort to start updating this again. We'll see how that goes after tonight.

This is the most recent piece that I finished up. I'm happy with how it came out, but it's a little tough for me to love this piece. Kendall told me what they wanted and this was it. Sometimes its hard to be completely in love with a piece when that is the case, but not always. The piece that I am finishing up now is the same scenario, but I am extremely happy with it. I'm going to say that it is my best piece in a while, but I'll save the details for when I post it.

I just noticed that ILTA put out the Oct. 2010 White paper. I had a lot of fun with this illustration. I am very happy with how it came out. I had a reference photo that I found online, but I modeled a lot of this off the top of my head from my own car. I always have fun adding in the little details, I think that is what really makes the pieces.

Here is my latest piece for ILTA. It was pretty fun to work on. I always like building 3D objects in illustrator. It always presents some sort of challenge. I've never had to put text one an image in perspective in illustrator before. It really didn't take me all that long to figure it out (a few minutes), but it was a puzzler none the less requiring me to stop and think.

As of it today it should be officially retired and removed from the buses. I was lucky enough to get a chance encounter with one of the buses on my way to the Braves game, last night. I had to force my friend off the bus to snap this picture.

I would like to congratulate ILTA for recieving the 2010 Gold Circle Award for Excellence in Association Communications in the "Print Magazine" category from ASEA. There were nearly 250 entries in multiple categories and ILTA came out on top.

“Winners of the Gold Circle Award competition have taken their projects to the next level, integrating the
fundamentals of effective communications with elements of creativity, design, technology and innovation
as well as metrics to measure effectiveness of their strategies,” said Cecilia Sepp, chair of the
Communication Section Council."

And for a little pat on my back... Kendall, the creative director over at ILTA, had this to say to me in an e-mail this morning,

"We recently found out that Peer to Peer won GCA's 2010 Award of Excellence in Association Communications Print Magazines Category. They looked at not only editorial, but design too, so I know your awesome covers played a role in helping us win."

I was so excited this morning when Sprague handed me a few of these! Earlier in the season Bobby (head of sales) had me design a logo for the Dream Elite (season ticket holders). I then laid out a pin to get made up to give to them.
I've been waiting for a long time to see these come in. I think they look great. They look better then I imagined them to. I think for some reason I thought they'd be on gold. The silver is much better.

Last night as I was checking out at the local Kroger, my Catalina Cupon Ad printed out. They have been out for a couple of weeks now, but we haven't been shopping at Kroger lately, just due to being too busy, and Super Target being right behind our house.
It's exciting to see things like this. There was a brief feeling of wanting to tell someone that I made this, but it goes away fast when you realize you'd sound like a looney.
The original looks a lot more vibrant and saturated, but I guess the little printers skimp on ink. We knew it would come out faded, because the proof was. I had to adjust it a little in photoshop to make it a little more vibrant before posting. That's why this one is not completely washed out.

I helped to create these temp tattoos. Before they were full color and had a large circle around it. The color was hard to read on the players. I simplified the logo and just made it all black so it would show up better. The players wear them each game featuring someone from the Children's Hospital of Atlanta. Madison will be featured at Saturday's game.

I just saw that the new Peer to Peer is available online. It's been a little while since I did a piece for ILTA.

This is the interior spread that I did. I like how it came out. These things always look so much better one the type is added. After seeing this again, I wish that I had made the base for the ball a little bigger, but I'm still happy with the look of it.

Here is what the AD had to say about it:
"I know I say this every time, but I really mean it; this issue is the best yet! The cover looks incredible and we’re really proud to show off this issue."

I am currently working on a new one, and I am trying out a different illustration style. I'm excited to be able to show it, but it will be a little while before I can post it.

Well, I went down to the transit station today to see if I could find a bus with my Dream ad on it. I did not, but I took pictures anyways so I could make a mock up. I couldn't get good pictures because the buses were back lit and you are not allowed on the other side. I suppose this is good enough until I can get pictures of the real thing.

We had to design a cd and website for our final project in my Vector Raster class. I really liked where my posters had gone so I decided to continue with that. I decided to make a cd as if it were live recordings from the tour and a website to promote the tour.
I had a lot of fun with this and I am very pleased with how it came out. It took me two tries to get the actual printed case folded right. I had to make a few tiny adjustments for the second go around.

This is the King Poster I designed to go on the side of the Marta Buses. We sent it off to print earlier this week. I'm excited to see it on the side of a bus... at least I hope to see it on a side of a bus. Hopefully I will at least get a picture of the final product.

This was my final project for my intro to graphic design class. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
We had to take a controversial topic and make a pamphlet around it. I wasn't sure what I wanted to tackle for a topic, so I first thought about how the pamphlet would work. My professor had some samples so I was looking at them and opening and closing them getting a feel for the different types. I found that I wanted something thing thin that would open horizontally.

My next process was to figure out what would work on that sort of layout? I decided that a cigarette was compact and would fit nicely.

I laid out two designs on opening horizontally and one opening vertically. My professor opted for the vertical one.

On top of the controversial topic, we also had to create a logo using metaphor, metonymy, or bisociation. I chose to use metonymy.

Tonight was the Atlanta Dream home opener against the Indiana Fever. It was a lot of fun. Meaghan and I got really good seats and it was cool to see my graphics as well. We won, but it was a close game. It was hard to get good photos of the LED's because of how bright they are and not having a tripod. Believe it or not, Meaghan's blackberry took better pictures then her digital camera.

In addition to the LED's that I laid out, I also laid out the roster cards for tonight's game and I'm sure I will be doing so for all other home games. I also laid out the spotters chart, but I did not receive a copy. It can be seen in the media guide on the Atlanta Dream's website. It is a page of head shots and names and numbers of some of the players. It is given to the opposing team when they come into town to play us.
EDIT May 17th: I did not lay out THESE roster cards per say. I did lay out the Dream one, but I realized at work today that I did the Mystics roster card, not the Fever. I did start on the Connecticut Sun roster cards today.

Today we had a chance to go over to the arena and check out the LED boards before the game opener, Sunday night. We also went up to the control room to meet with Geoff, of ANC Sports, the operator to go over how the process works with the LED's. Some of you may have noticed by now that I have returned to SCAD and I am in the process of working towards a graphic design degree. I am in the hopes of finding my way into the world of sports design. Last week I started an internship with the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA. It's only been 4 days now, but I love it. It's a lot of fun and so are my coworkers. This piece is just a sample of what I have been working on. Hopefully soon I will have more cool stuff to upload on here like bus ads and arena displays.

For my vector raster class we had to use the research we had gathered from the preliminary exploration and from the record labels and do some further research into tour posters. From our findings, we had to produce posters inspired by what we found. I chose to actually make mine look old as well. I tried to get all of the info as accurate as I could. Some of the stuff is made up or guessed upon, but I used educated choices. I'm pretty happy with how these turned out. When I was getting them printed out the man at Staples told me that the Gillespie poster was a very unique piece and asked where I had gotten it from. He was very surprised when I told him that I had made it. I guess that means I achieved my goal.

For those of you who don't know, I am back in college. I decided to go back for graphic design at SCAD ATL.

One of the classes I have to take is Vector & Raster Graphics. The first project was on illustrator techniques. I have been using the program for some time now so it wasn't too hard. We had to do a lot of research prior to these pieces, but the main idea was to pick a genre of music between the 50's-80's. I picked jazz in the 50's. For this project we had to design labels to go on records for that time period. I chose to go with two looks and sizes. I felt like they would be appropriate to share here on my blog.

I had an interview with the Atlanta Dream, of the WNBA, this morning for the graphic design internship. I'm very excited about the opportunity. They said that I should know by the end of the week if I got the position or not. I feel very good about the interview and think I will get the job. Even if I don't get the position, it was an awesome experience and I will keep on trucking and know that my time will come soon.

I don't think that I could have asked for that to go better. My resume and booklets went over very well. The Stingrays and the Thrashers/Hawks showed a lot of interest. Hopefully soon I will have the pleasure to work with both of them.

Tomorrow I will be in attendance at the Atlanta Hawks career fair. I'm pretty excited for it. Teams from the NFL, NBA/NHL, MLB and minor league affiliations will be present. I"ll try to report back after the event.

In preparation for the gathering, I created some portfolio booklets to give to the team representatives that can be viewed/ downloaded on the splash page of my website, as well.

I guess shortly I will need to launch a design website as well. Be on the look out for that. It could be next week, it could be in a year.

In recent times, I have somewhat shifted my direction. I have become increasingly interested in sports design. I am actually going back to school for graphic design to pursue a career in sports design.

In other news, this piece that I have posted is my submission for a call for entries over at one of my favorite blogs: Puckdrawn

Right now the blog is featuring a call for entries with the AAHL for a new playoffs logo. The deadline isn't until the end of the month, but you can keep checking back at Puckdrawn to see all of the submissions. Wish me luck!

Also, be on the look out for a new ILTA White Paper soon. I just finished up another one, but it won't be out for a while. I'm excited for that one.

MS Walk

A little while back I had designed a poster for the MS walk as a class project, but really I had gotten the idea from my aunt Brenda. This year is her 30th year since her diagnosis of the disease. For the past few years my mother and other friends and family have joined Brenda in the annual MS walk to raise funds to help find a cure and provide education, support and advocacy that address the needs of people living with MS.

For those of you unfamiliar with what MS is, I found this blurb on the National MS Society website:

Having multiple sclerosis means that you may not be able to walk when you wake up. Or that you may suddenly have impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. The symptoms of MS are different for everyone, and can be disabling -- the only certainty is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day.

This is the cover I did for the December issue of ILTA's Peer to Peer. I like the interior piece I did better. The concept was to combine business can casual using the wireless device. Since I had already done an Iphone for the interior piece, I didn't want to draw another for the cover. I modeled this phone after my G1 Google phone.

There is one more illustration for ILTA that should come out this year, but don't worry I have resigned with them for next year.

I'm not really a fan of flame tattoos, but it gets the point across.

I just saw on ILTA's website that the online version of the December Peer to Peer is available. This is the interior piece I did for this issue. I drew an Iphone once before, I believe for Saturday Illustrations. I think this one came out a whole lot better. I'm glad I had done that one, because it made this one easier. From the last one I had drawn I learned that there really was no good color to make the background and that an off white or sand was about the most color you could give it. That saved a lot of time from playing around with color on this one. I even brought back some of my halftones. I don't use those as much anymore, but I still do from time to time.

This piece for ILTA was released a little bit ago. It's about infrastructure technologies, as the cover indicates. Trying saying that 3 times fast, "Infrastructure Technologies!" Kendall wanted it to look like the inner workings of a computer merged with a city.

In other news, the final Peer to Peer of the year should be out soon. AND, drum roll..... ILTA renewed my contract so I'll be producing art for them all year long in 2010.

I am currently working on the last Peer to Peer cover of the year. I'll soon be on to the interior piece as well.

The next White Paper should be coming out soon, so keep checking back for that.

I should be updating my site soon (just adding images). I need to reinstall Dreamweaver on my computer again. My computer had a major issue a month or two back and I had to reformat it. Things kind of slowed down for me then which is why I was late in posting those two White Paper covers online.

I have another news feed up on the Little Chimp Society. For those of you that don't know what LCS is, LCS is a news website for illustration. I just learned about it myself. I'm really trying to amp up my marketing and getting my name out. It's not really that big of a deal to be on that site, since I submit the news myself. They just have to approve it, but I am still getting in people's faces.

One of my friends does IT work in the Hearst Corp. building, which is where a lot of magazines are published. I sent him home today with some of my mailers so hopefully he can get them in front of the right people to pass my name on.

I honestly don't remember much about this assignment. I've been pretty busy lately as you can tell from how late I am on posting this. I'm happy with how it turned out though. My favorite part about it is the texture I got on it. I seem to find myself using these colors a lot. I know that ILTA likes me to use bright colors and I think that these are really catching.

The new Harvard Business Review is out. I have been waiting a few months for this one to come out. Lindsay Sweeney had me do two illustrations for this one. She approached me with the idea of two, but wasn't sure if it would work out, which at first it didn't, but in the end she came back to have me to the spot on the articles opening page. I was really excited that she asked me to do another illustration. I guess that means I did something right the first time and hopefully she will ask me to do a third.

This one was tough. I racked my brain for a bit on this one and I pitched a bunch of ideas which didn't work out. I pitched an idea about vines and growing, which she liked, but it wasn't quite there yet so I pitched a few more. I forget now what had done it, but we mixed a few ideas and finally worked the concept down to what you see now.

The article is about companies needing to have more of a part in online communities. Not to just watch them and understand them, but to be part of them.

I'm very pleased with how this piece came out. I think that the two assignments I have done for them are my favorites, though I'm sure that fact that they are forever tagged with "Harvard Business Review" makes me a little partial to them. Hopefully soon I will have some more and possibly even some Business Week....? Wishful thinking.

So I carved another pumpkin. We had a lot of fun doing it. I haven't carved one for a few years now, not since I carved the Tomcat one. I think this one is a little better. It has a little bit more detail to it. I'm pretty happy with it. We have a third pumpkin, we are trying to decide what to do with it.

This piece has been out for a little bit now. I've just been busy and my computer crashed and I had to reformat it so I haven't been able to get to it.

As you have probably noticed, Saturday Illustrations has not been going on the past few weeks, and really died off a bit before that. I think that it has gotten to be too much for many of us lately. I know myself personally have gotten pretty busy. I'm not calling the project dead, I'd like to hopefully bring it back at some point. Look for it in the future, and hopefully all or most of the same crew will be back.

My good friend Kris Johnsen and his friend have teamed up and produced Portland Pins up in Portland, ME. It seems like they are doing pretty well. This is my first contribution.

"We asked local artists to submit their own hand-made designs for 1″″buttons, then we mixed the end results all up in a gumball machine so people could buy great, unique artwork for very little (for 25 cents you get one to three pins from the machine). Currently, you can find our original machine at Eli-Phant (253 Congress St., Portland, Maine). A second machine will find a new home every month, with the location changing in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk and other special events. It is currently at SPACE Gallery."

A little write up on them was featured in the debut issue of Maine Magazine, out this month.

Professional Development Peer to Peer

Finally the next Peer to Peer is out. I do these so far in advance and I can't post them until ILTA releases them.
I really like this one and word has it that the boss really likes this issue. That is always good to hear. Only one more Peer to Peer left this year. I'm a little sad about that. I like doing the Peer to Peer better then the White Papers. I'm not sure why. I guess they just feel special since it is only 4 times a year. There is an illustration I did in the inside as well. You can view the issue here.

In other good news, Harvard Business Review just gave me another job. As of right now it is another 1/2 page for the November issue, but in the next day or two they might tack on another 1/4 page spot. Hopefully this is a sign of a good long work relationship much like the one I have with ILTA.

If you have not seen yet, I have a new website up. It is similar to the last one, just with some minor updates and streamlining. I am in the process of ordering some new mailers as well.

It's been a while. Things have been crazy. I finally got a new car so that will free up some more of my time again. That was a long drawn out head ache.

I had some fun with this piece. I don't think the concept is all that strong, but it was a good practice and experimentation of techniques. I made the sun in illustrator. This is the first time I have mixed illustrator with my charcoal line work. I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm currently working on another piece for ILTA as well.

I just saw this morning that ILTA has put up the last cover I did for them. It's been a little while since I did this one. I think I like it better now then I did then. I didn't dislike it then, but it wasn't my favorite. I think this one is pretty self explanatory.
I'm excited for the next Peer to Peer to be released. I really like the cover I did for it.
